While there are various factors that contribute to mental well-being, one often overlooked and underestimated aspect is hydration. Dehydration is a common condition that occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. This can have a profound impact on mental health. In this blog, we will explore the intricate relationship between dehydration and mental well-being. The Link Between Dehydration & Mental Health Anxiety and Depression: According to a study conducted in 2018, dehydration can lead to anxiety and depression. Another research study focused on children aged 9 to 11 in the United States and explored the impact of consuming varying levels of water- low, high or ad libitum (as desired), on mental flexibility. The findings revealed that those who consumed high amounts of water (approximately 10.5 cups daily) exhibited greater mental flexibility. Interestingly, the group instructed to drink water as desired showed results comparable to those who consumed low amounts of water (around two cups per day). Our brain is made up of 73% water. When it starts to dehydrate, the system starts to slow down. This can further cause symptoms of anxiety and depression. 2. Cognitive Functions: When there is a less consumption of water, it becomes hard for us to concentrate as the brain functioning becomes slow. Dehydration has been linked to decreased alertness and increased perception of task difficulty. Maintaining proper hydration levels can enhance cognitive performance, leading to improved focus, attention, and overall mental clarity. Studies appear to indicate that cognitive performance starts to become compromised even at mild levels of dehydration, effecting such things as mood, working memory, and concentration. Research indicates that even a 1% level of dehydration can lead to a significant 5% decline in cognitive function. Furthermore, a 2% decrease in brain hydration has been associated with short-term memory loss and difficulties in performing mathematical computations. 3. Sleep Quality and Energy Levels: When dehydration occurs, the thermoregulatory system becomes less effective, which means one can end up feeling sluggish and dizzy. At the same time, there is evidence suggesting that insufficient sleep might be linked to dehydration. A study involving nearly 20,000 adults in both the United States and China revealed that individuals who slept only six hours per night exhibited notably higher rates of dehydration. Adequate hydration is crucial for maintaining proper bodily functions and sustaining energy levels and proper sleep. Tips for Staying Hydrated: Set an Alarm/Reminder: In our busy lives it is often possible that we forget to drink water. Set an alarm after ever hour or 2 or set reminders for drinking water. You can also use apps to put up these reminders. 2. Keep a Water Bottle Handy: Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go. When water is readily available and right in front of us, it is more likely that we will be drinking it more than usual. 3. Drink Water Before Every Meal: Consuming water before a meal offers several benefits, including promoting a sense of fullness that can help prevent overeating. Additionally, it supports the digestion process and enhances the absorption of nutrients. Moreover, drinking water before a meal can contribute to sustained energy levels after eating, helping to prevent the afternoon energy slump that often occurs around 2 o’clock. 4. A Diet with Higher Moisture Content: Consuming a well-balanced diet that includes ample fruits and vegetables is beneficial, as these foods typically have higher moisture content. This can contribute to increased water intake from your diet. Fruits and vegetables not only provide essential nutrients but also help hydrate the body due to their water-rich composition. The impact of dehydration on our mental health is significant but overlooked many a times. Make sure to take some proactive steps to keep yourself hydrated and ensure a healthier mind.
