Rather than working on it, you spend your time relaxing, watching your favorite TV show, listening to music or doing something which is totally not related to the work you should be doing! This phenomenon is procrastination. It is the act of putting off tasks or postponing them till the last minute. Many people who procrastinate want to stop doing it but are unable to do so. Procrastination is frequently thought of as a habit, but its actual roots lie in psychology. This blog delves into understanding the concept of procrastination by answering the question like “Why do we Procrastinate?”, its consequences and ways to overcome it. Why do we procrastinate? Procrastination can be attributed to various underlying factors. Following are a few reasons why we procrastinate: -Lack of Enjoyment: When we find a task dull and uninteresting we tend to delay it. -Fear of Inadequacy: When we fear not being able to achieve something that doesn’t meet our expectations, we start procrastinating. -Lack of Self-Confidence: A lack of self-confidence in one’s abilities can hinder motivation to begin a task. -Low Levels of Motivation: If a task doesn’t align with personal goals or lacks a clear purpose, individuals may struggle to find the drive to start it. -Impaired Self-Control: Procrastination may also take place when we give in to immediate gratification instead of exerting the discipline required to begin a less enjoyable task. -Confident about Completing the Task: Many a times, people are confident and optimistic about completing the tasks later, which leads to procrastination. Consequences of Procrastination: -Academic Issues: Students face issues related to academics when they procrastinate. They end up with poor grades, repetition of assignments and a poor performance in studies. -Career Issues: Procrastination can have lasting consequences on one’s career. This can include a reduction in productivity, missing deadlines, lesser learning opportunities and in some cases it can even lead to unemployment. -Social Consequences: The phenomenon of procrastination can cause various consequences to our social spheres as well. It can strain our relationships with those close to us, increase misunderstandings, reduce social confidence etc. -Worse Mental Health and Reduction in Well-Being: When we keep on delaying our work to the last minute, it can cause stress and anxiety, and can take a negative toll on our mental health. How to Overcome Procrastination: Take Small Steps: Break down your work into small parts and work on them accordingly. The little achievements will motivate you to finish the task. 2. Try making “To-Do Lists”: Try to make daily to-do lists as they help you keep on track. 3. Deal with Distractions: Turn off all distractions and utilize the time you have to complete your work. 4. Pay Attention to the Onset of Procrastination: Recognize the early signs of procrastination, such as making excuses, over thinking, delaying a task and take steps to overcome the temptation to put off your work. Conclusion: We might not take procrastination seriously, but it is time, we realize that it can deeply impact our life. Taking the right action towards overcoming it is extremely crucial.
